State of Georgia
Although the Spaniards first explored Georgia in 1540 the British established the first colony in 1733. In 1742 the Spanish attacked but were defeated. Strongly Confederate during the Civil War, Georgia saw great destruction at the hands of the Union forces, led by General William T. Sherman, who burned Atlanta during his devastating march to the sea.
