State of Rhode Island
Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams and other exiles from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Their leaving was based on religious differences. Rhode Islanders were always wary of authority, as evidenced by their burning of two British revenue cutters just before the American Revolution. Newport was noted for being the summer home of society’s elite in the mid nineteenth century. Their grand mansions are tourist attractions today.
The capital of Rhode Island, the smallest state, is Providence. Other large cities are Warwick, Cranston, Pawtucket and Woonsocket. Population in 2005 was 1,076,189. The state is a major jewelry manufacturer. Boat and ship construction, electronics, plastic products and metals are also important products. Rhode Island is also a major center for the study of the ocean. Fishing boats go out of Galilee and Newport. The state also produces grapes for local wine making, nursery stock and turf.
Tourism is an important part of the economy. Newport, Trouro Synagogue, the oldest in the U.S., the General Nathaniel Greene Homestead and Block Island all attract large numbers of visitors.
