State of Texas
In the 16th and 17th centuries Spanish explorers visited the area. In 1821, Americans began to settle near the Brazos River under the leadership of Stephen Austin. At the time the region was controlled by Mexico. A brief war ensued and the Republic of Texas was born with Sam Houston as president. Texas became a state in 1845. Continuing border disputes led to the Mexican War pf 1846-1848.
The capital of the second largest state is Austin. Other major cities are Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, El Paso and Corpus Christi. The population in 2005 was 22,859,968. Texas is a leader in the production of oil, chemicals, machinery, and transportation equipment. Texas farms produce cattle, sheep, cotton, dairy products, poultry, eggs, rice sugar cane and peanuts.
The Gulf Coast resort area is a major tourist attraction, as is the Alamo, the Johnson Space Center and the Guadalupe Mountains and Big Bend National Park.
